NOTE - This course is the first of TWO required courses to become certified to administer medication.  This course is the online content portion. The other required course is a skills checklist course that must be completed with your school nurse. Please be sure to register for Course XXXXX to complete both required parts to become certified.

This class is for training credit only.  No in-service credit will be awarded for this class.  Certified staff may complete the training during workday hours during planning time.

NOTE- Classified staff - please check with your building administrator prior to registering for this course.  You will need to obtain verbal approval from your principal/supervisor on when the training should be completed, either during your regular work hours or outside your regular work hours for comp time. Comp time will not be awarded for this course if prior principal approval was not obtained.

This training is facilitated by our District Registered Nurse regarding assistance with children taking their medication at school. It will also cover emergency medication for children, while at school.

Emergency Medicines can be given by non-licensed staff who volunteer to be trained. They can assist when the school nurse is unavailable.

Tennessee Code Annotated 49-5-415 allows for the assistance in self-administration of medication and they shall not be liable in any court of law for injury resulting from the reasonable and prudent assistance in the self-administration of such.

Also per the Tennessee Governmental Tort Liability Act (GTLA), each employee of the school system as an individual is immune from the tort liability unless it involves a criminal act by the individual employee. The standard for that normally means that an employee of the school system would have to have intent to harm in order to lose the immune status.

NOTE: EpiPen is included in this class.
